After six months running our agency on a Pro account with eight active client sub-accounts, we can say it largely delivers. Not perfectly and not without friction, but it delivers.

Workflow Automation

The automation builder (called Workflows) is where GHL earns its money. You can build multi-step sequences triggered by form fills, tag changes, pipeline moves, appointment bookings, and more. Actions include email, SMS, calls, Slack notifications, Google Sheet updates, and conditional branching. Once it clicks, typically after a week or two, you can automate entire client onboarding sequences that used to require a VA. This is GHL's strongest feature.

Email Marketing

Drag-and-drop email builder, broadcast campaigns, drip sequences, and behaviour-based triggers. Works well for the basics. Important note: GHL uses LC Mail (powered by Mailgun) for sending, which costs $0.01 per email on top of your subscription. Two-Way SMS

This is a genuine differentiator. Native two-way SMS lets you have real conversations with leads inside GHL without any third-party integration. Funnel & Website Builder

Comparable to ClickFunnels 2.0. Good template library, drag-and-drop editor, standard funnel elements (opt-ins, sales pages, order bumps, upsells). 5. The Hidden Costs Nobody Mentions

Most GHL reviews only list the subscription price. Here's what they miss.

LC Mail: $0.01 per email sent

GHL uses their own sending infrastructure (LC Mail, powered by Mailgun) which charges per email on top of your monthly subscription. At small volume this is negligible. But if you're sending to a list of 30,000 contacts, you're looking at $300/month in email costs alone, on top of your $297 plan. At scale, factor this into your pricing before committing.

LC Phone: usage-based SMS and call costs

SMS is also usage-based via LC Phone (Twilio). Inbound and outbound SMS are typically $0.01–$0.02 per message. For high-volume SMS campaigns, this adds up. The upside: these costs can be passed on to clients via GHL's rebilling feature on higher plans.

Email deliverability: the real concern

Several users report lower email deliverability when switching to GHL from dedicated platforms like ActiveCampaign or Klaviyo. Mailgun is a reliable infrastructure provider, but GHL is a shared environment. Proper domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and list hygiene matter more here than on a dedicated email platform. If email is your primary channel, budget time for proper warm-up.
